Further information about registered office
Registered office of the company is the official address of a limited company. By law every company must have a registered office.
The registered office must be a real address, i.e. a physical location where it is possible for the company to accept service of documents. Mail Boxes are not accepted as registered office address of the company.
The registered office need not be a place where the company carries on its day-to-day business. Small businesses often use the director’s home address as the registered office address of the company. However, this may not be desirable for various reasons.
A company incorporated in England or Wales must have a registered office in England or Wales and a company incorporated in Scotland would need to have its registered office in Scotland. This is where government offices like companies house and HMRC will send correspondence addressed to the company. This is where any creditors’ notices will be served.

Further information about directors’ service address
Since 1 October 2009, individual directors have been able to take advantage of having a service address. This address can be their residential address, the company’s registered office address or any other address they might choose. It will be the service address that will appear on the public records, as opposed to their usual residential address, as it has been in the past.
Directors will still need to provide their residential address when incorporating a company or when completing an appointment form, but it will be held on a private register and will only be accessible to limited groups of people, i.e. specific government bodies or credit reference agencies.
